Viral Marketing Campaign: Unit 56: Jack Ryan

BTEC Level 3 MMJ
Unit 56: Viral Marketing

Task 2:

Create a viral marketing campaign plan for your chosen product.
Chosen product: Movie – Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014)
About: Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.

My ideas:
For my viral marketing campaign I have chosen to base It on the 2014 film Jack Ryan. My ideas for this would to be to help Jack Ryan unlock a code to prevent the world coming to an end. This could either be a race to beat the Russians at stealing the code, which will allow our side to win and capture the Russian spy’s and terrorist attack planners.

Promoting Ideas:
For the first week: Release posters and advertisements on billboards, buses, all over the streets inviting you to join the CIA under Jack Ryan’s help.
·      Introduce the Russians

Second week: Introduce the ‘Unlock the code’ tag line and spread it around everywhere. Promote the idea of running out of time and needing to win.
·      Introduce posters about the Russians with their tagline of “Never defeated” to add extra hype to those on Jack Ryan’s side.
·      Make them so evil; repeat the idea of running out of time; keep on promoting the fact the Russians will win.

Third week: Introduce online games and create a website based on the movie to promote Jack Ryan, but have links and pop ups from the Russians that will repeat the idea of running out of time, and “we’re going to get there first”, “you’re going to lose”, “We always win”, “never defeated” type of attitude.

Fourth Week: In the movie Jack Ryan, it’s called “shadow recruit”, aim to release a video of a shadowed man running around building’s and alley ways with a gun with captions such as “are you with him?” “Lets go”

Magazine Analysis

Glamour magazine

One social networking site Glamour Magazine UK use to promote themselves is Twitter, which is highly popular among their readers and celebrities who have done shoots for them, as well as clothing brands/designers that they have used within their shoots or featured in their magazine.

Here is a screen grab of Glamour Magazine.
Within their header Glamour have an image of their company logo. In front of this is their icon which they always update to the most recent issue of their magazine. This month's is JLO on the front cover.
Underneath the icon is a short and punchy biography on who they are, and under that their are links to their website.

Glamour magazine have a cocktail of tweets that always end with a hyperlink that send you straight to their website. They always tend to write a catchy tweet to draw attention to the reader so they will want to click on Glamour's website and read more. This helps promote their product.
Depending on what they are tweeting about, they will also link their Instagram and a link to a picture, which again promotes them.

As you can see above these are the stats for Glamour magazine. Twitter shows you below certain celebrities that follow Glamour. This is promotional to Glamour because if a certain celebrity has had a photo shoot for Glamour and they follow their twitter account, that celebrity is also tweeting about their cover to their followers which promotes Glamour even more as they are exposed to a wider audience. Also fans of a celebrity may want to see what the celeb they love has been up too/ a shoot they have recently done which means they will then buy the magazine, which once again promotes Glamour.
Beauty company such as Benefit Cosmetics are also following Glamour, as Glamour will use some of their products in their photo shoot's  This is almost like a food chain. Glamour do a profile piece on a Celebrity -> They use Benefit's beauty products as well as other brands in their shoot -> Benefit will know what they have used and will tweet something like 'Get brows like Kim Kardashian has in this weeks Glamour -> Benefit and Glamour are promoting each other -> Kim Kardashian will tweet about her shoot and her beauty team -> Kim's followers are presented with her cover -> This draws them to the website -> Glamour gets more attention and viewers.

This is Glamour's tweet feed, as i said before they will tweet something catchy and then a hyperlink to their website which will allow you to view the whole story. Here is an example:

Another social networking site Glamour use to promote themselves is Instagram. On Instagram they focus mostly on products. On their Instagram they post pictures of clothing, make up, celebrities, members of staff.
They tend to promote other beauty brands and post their products. An example:

In the caption of the picture they include Rimmel London's Instagram name as they are promoting a categorised brand which is lip balms.

Glamour also use a Facebook page to promote themselves, but college has blocked the website and i am unable to show a screenshot of this.
I predict that on their facebook they post similar things, also with it now possible to share instagram posts and tweets to facebook, they will be able to share whatever they are talking about on different social networking sites to facebook and vice versa.

Glamour also have an option for readers to become even more involved in the magazine as they offer you to sign up for their newsletter for FREE. This promotes Glamour; e.g:
A friend has signed up for Glamour's newsletter ----> They get an email about Glamours hottest trends in shoes ---> This comes with information on shoes and where to buy them ----> The friend buys a pair of shoes based on the information glamour has given her/him (such as the shop, the price, where etc) ---> the friend of the friend asks him/her where they got their shoes from and how they got them ---> They'll answer with something like "I signed up for Glamour's newsletter and they told me about it in my email' ---> This will interest the friend ---> They sign up for the newsletter = More money and popularity status for Glamour Magazine.

Lastly, Glamour promote their magazine by also having an app available to download from the App Store free of charge. This allows iphone, ipod, ipad, and Mac users to carry around Glamour on their device to have access too whenever they want. Their is an option to buy the online version of Glamour within the app store, which allows you to have every new issue of Glamour straight on your mobile.

Magazine 2 - NME

NME is a music magazine that covers all aspects of music news and more. By researching personally through their social media feeds, their twitter and their website, it is clear NME use a range of social media and online advertising to promote their magazine.
This is shown first of all on their website.

Above it shows a screen grab of NME's website. It is designed in almost the same style as a newspaper. It shows two columns of text and some photos, which are filled with links to stories. They are each categorised under the title of 'NEWS'. NME always have a link somewhere you click to promote themselves  Above the 'NEWS' column their is a banner that is promoting the NME app from spotifiy which apparently allows you to 'Discover the best new music'.
The main page of their website is full of information, including videos, photos, links, stories, music and more. Everything news related to the music industry is presented on this page to attract viewers.

Above are the links that are found on NME's main page on their website. Their is a range to keep the viewer interested, as they have many options on what to view. Each of these links send you to information that is always being updated for you.

Their twitter page is the main source for sending links to their website. NME tweet the headline of a story which they try to make as interesting and catchy as possible to attract the viewer, along with a link to the story that is on their website. Twitter helps promote NME as it allows the NME twitter admin to insert links quickly to keep their audience updated and interested.

Back to their website, NME show links for a range of social networks they are a part of and you can find them on, which above is Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Youtube, Spotify. This means they have 6 social feeds to which they are promotion their magazine and music on, which hundreds are people are also part of. At the bottom of their website it clearly shows links to what you can find them on;

NME also have something called 'NME EXTRA' which allows users to sign up for a free account which let them:

  • Comment on articles they post to their website
  • Enter competitions; free stuff
  • Recieve and stay updated with the NME newsletter
  • Vote in the NME awards
NME are making it their priority to get to know their viewers better, as it says in the image above.
Their is also an option to sign up with facebook, which causes less hassle if you have it.
This is a benefit for the magazine as it allows NME to keep updated with stats of how many people enjoy their magazine and what they post.

Their is a link on their website which takes you too the 'BRAND NEW ISSUE'. It shows the front cover of the latest issue, along with what this issue of the magazine includes and a preview of one of the articles.

Their is also an option that allows you to BUY the digital version, which could make it easier for those who may enjoy having their magazine avaliable on their ipad, or just makes it easier for them in general instead of going all the way to the shop to purchase one.

TWITTER FEED - PERSONAL USE & ANALYSIS

As part of creating my Fashion Magazine we are all asked to create a personal Twitter account that would allow us to follow people and companies that relate to the topic of our magazine. As I chose Fashion as my topic I followed almost every British & American Fashion magazine their is. I also followed British newspapers and magazines.

I've noticed that with the Fashion Magazines, they are constantly bombarding your Timeline with the very latest news stories, the trends and everything to do with Fashion which is very helpful and appeals to those interested.
As you can see, British Vogue are amongst those that are constantly tweeting as the small second intervals between each tweet are very short.
I love the way British Vogue always tweet a catchy tweet, and then give you the link which allows you to read more on what they've posted.
Another news source I follow and LOVE reading their tweets is E! News. "EONLINE" as it is called, always have the very latest news on everything and anything. Being an American news source and being closer to the celebs and events that they are actually talking about, this allows me to see pictures and videos on my TL that either E themselves have captured of paparazzi.
They always manage to fit just the right amount of a catchy heading in before they post the link to their website, using a good range of connectives to make it sound interesting.
Whether its on Fashion to Music to Sport, they always give you the best news stories and photographs.

What I also love about E is that any celebrity or business they are partnered with they tend to focus posting the latest news on them first, such as The Kardashians. E have been airing the Kardashians for the last 5 years and they are one of the biggest sources of attraction and reason for a large number of viewers on E! Enews online and on twitter always post the LATEST news about that to ensure that they are being promoted in a positive way, and the fans that follow E are being given what they want. Also as E is so popular anyway, when news comes from a source like E it's most likely to be more secure regarding honesty.

As you can se below, my Twitter feed shows myself RT'ing the most recent tweets from Fashion magazine sources, uploading photo's and the amount of companys and people I am following.
